Lower II and the love of languages

Posted: 29th March 2018

The visit of Holy Family Primary School.

Tuesday 20th March saw St Augustine’s Priory welcome the pupils of Holy Family Primary School.  It is always great to share our love of languages and our facilities with our fellow schools and Mr Alejandro, Head of Modern Languages, describes the day:

‘Our young Augustinians share a passion for learning languages, and the inclusive, multicultural nature of our School encourages such curiosity and facilitates our girls’ cultural education. We advocate the learning of languages from a young age and, naturally, we want to share our enthusiasm for the subject.

On Tuesday 20th March we therefore invited the Year Five pupils from Holy Family Primary School to join our Lower II for a day of modern language exploration! These linking days are occasions on which our girls broaden their experience of working in partnerships. In addition to the immediate social enrichment this provides, such events contribute to the girls’ enthusiasm for the subject and preparation for lifelong success.

A fun and informative programme of activities included a French play, taster sessions in Congolese (Lingala), Russian and Serbian, artistic poetry and singing in Swahili! The sessions were not only run by the Modern Languages teachers at St Augustine’s Priory, but also by some of our A Level students as well as our Music Department! Each pupil was given a passport to give them access to each of the activities which they had to make sure was stamped upon completion!

The day was a big success and I would like to give a huge ‘thank you’ to all of our Lower II and the Holy Family pupils who were incredibly enthusiastic throughout the entire day and gave every activity a real go! Thank you also to the fantastic members of my department, Miss Westley for her entertaining African singing contribution, and our Priory 6 linguists Leah, Emilija, Ljiljana and Daniela.

Enough from me. Below is feedback we received from pupils at both sets of schools.’

“I really enjoy language learning as it is fun. I did not expect how fun today was going to be” Holy Family pupil.

“I adore language learning and I thought this before today” – Lucia, Lower II.

“I think it is a life skill” Anaya, Lower II.

“I would like to learn Russian because it is very interesting and fun to learn. I would also like to learn how to speak fluent French” – Lower II pupil.

And, in joyous conclusion, “This was the best day of the year” – Holy Family pupil.
