Seniors visit Royal Albert Hall

A Musical Michaelmas Term

It is late November and preparations for our annual St Cecilia Concert this week are nearing completion and thoughts are already turning to our Christmas Carol Service on 12th December.  Here Dr Higgins, Director of Music, reports on an eventful Michaelmas Term:

‘Michaelmas is always a busy time for any Music Department. Ensembles restart after the long summer break, taking in brand new members or those who have moved from Juniors to Seniors; the first concerts of the season will happen (in our case, the St Cecilia’s Concert on Thursday 23rd November at 7.00pm); preparations will begin for Carol Services; instrumental exams will take place.

In the midst of all this hubbub, the Music Department took a visit of Seniors to the Royal Albert Hall on 14th November to catch a Youth Prom. This was organised by the charity Music For Youth which aims to bring performing opportunities to young people under the age of 21.

The Prom was an eclectic mix of music: we saw performances of Classical music, Jazz, Silver Band and Hip-Hop to name but a few. There was a spectacular massed group performance which opened the second half involving a huge choir, full orchestra, art installation and wine glasses would you believe!

It was a fantastic evening, and an invaluable experience for our students to see young people of their age perform in the Albert Hall.

I hope many of you will join us for the St Cecilia concert this week. The event promises to be another enjoyable one, and will see the debut performance of St Augustine’s Chamber Choir, which we are all looking forward to.’
