Pastoral Care & Well Being

At St Augustine’s, we believe that true learning flourishes in happiness. As St Augustine himself observed, "We learn well when we are happy." That belief shapes our entire approach to pastoral care, where the emotional, spiritual, and academic journeys of each child are deeply interconnected.

A Community Where Every Child Matters

Every child at St Augustine’s is cherished for their individuality. We remind our pupils that no one else on earth shares their fingerprints — each one has a unique role to play in the world. This ethos forms the foundation of our outstanding pastoral care, which is grounded in strong relationships and led by a highly trained, experienced team.

We uphold the highest standards of behaviour, and visitors consistently comment on the calm, purposeful atmosphere our pupils create. This balance — celebrating each individual while fostering care for others — is guided day to day by our exceptional form teachers and enriched by our shared community values.

Our Way of Proceeding: RADIO

Our RADIO values — Respect, Active listening, and Dialogue — are the compass for our community interactions. These principles underpin both everyday relationships and our wider outreach work. Through volunteering, service, and acts of kindness, pupils discover that well-being is not just individual but collective.

The Power of Place: Learning in Nature

Our extensive grounds — including meadows, climbing trees, Farm and even a pirate ship — offer space to play, think, and be. Whether performing on our outdoor stage or getting muddy with hands-on learning, our curriculum embraces the outdoors. This physical freedom cultivates mental peace and a sense of rootedness that helps our students face a frenzied, uncertain world with confidence and calm.

Trusted Adults and Peer Support

Our students know where to turn for help. In a warm, inclusive atmosphere where year groups know each other, support is never far away. Sixth Formers are trained in listening and take pride in mentoring younger students. For our girls, the Girls on Board programme equips them with life-long skills to navigate friendships with empathy and resilience.

We are delighted to have a full-time counsellor as part of the team.

We also understand that every child is different. Our rich co-curricular programme provides opportunities for everyone — from the socially dynamic to those who prefer quiet reflection.

Partnership with Families

We value our close partnership with parents and carers. Our Pastoral and Safeguarding Support Padlet and Online Safety Hub are vital resources, offering expert guidance on everything from mental health to digital well-being, gaming, and social media safety.

PSHE & RSE: Preparing for Life

All students follow a structured, spiral PSHE and RSE curriculum, which promotes emotional well-being, healthy relationships, informed choices, and deep self-awareness. This work enhances early intervention and ensures a supportive environment where pupils can thrive — preparing them not just for exams but for life.
