Seniors: Change starts with you

The Earthshot Prize.

The Earthshot Prize’s website states, ‘The Earthshot Prize is the most prestigious global environment prize in history, designed to incentivise change and help repair our planet over the next ten years.

The Prize aims to turn the current pessimism surrounding environmental issues into optimism, by highlighting the ability of human ingenuity to bring about change, and inspiring collective action.’

This week, Miss Keep, Geography Department, launched the competition for Seniors to become involved in the Earthshot Prize, which is set to inspire the school.  She writes, ‘The Earthshot Prize is centred around five ‘Earthshots’ – simple but ambitious goals for our planet which, if achieved by 2030, will improve life for us all, for generations to come. Each Earthshot is underpinned by scientifically agreed targets including the UN Sustainable Development Goals and other internationally recognised measures to help repair our planet.

Together, they form a unique set of challenges rooted in science, which aim to generate new ways of thinking, as well as new technologies, systems, policies and solutions. By bringing these five critical issues together, The Earthshot Prize recognises the interconnectivity between environmental challenges and the urgent need to tackle them together.

The Earthshot Prize aims to find new solutions that work on every level, have a positive effect on environmental change and improve living standards globally, particularly for communities who are most at risk from climate change.

It takes its inspiration from President John F. Kennedy’s Moonshot which united millions of people around the goal to put man on the moon and catalysed the development of new technology in the 1960s.

The competition is open to all in the Seniors and pupils may compete individually, in pairs, groups or families. The aim is to come up with a solution to one of the five different problems in the world: protecting and restoring nature, cleaner air, reviving our oceans, building a waste free ocean, and fixing our climate. Talk to people at home and your friends!

Be creative with your entry – design a poster, write an essay, produce a powerpoint!  Your ideas must clearly state:

  • What issue are you focusing on?
  • What is your solution?
  • What stakeholders are involved in the solution, and how?
  • What are some of the problems with your solution? (Consider the economic and social impacts this could have).

All submissions are to be sent to Miss Keep (mkeep@sapriory.com) by Friday 23rd November 2020.

Finalists will be asked to present their solutions to a team of judges, a winner will be announced and there are a variety of prizes on offer (not only housepoints!). The top three entries will be entered on behalf of the school formally as a part of the Earthshot competition.

Change starts with you..
But it doesn’t start until you start!’
