Enriching our pupils’ appreciation and expanding their knowledge of art starts early at St Augustine’s Priory. Following on from the visit of Upper V and Priory6 to the Tate Modern earlier in the week, Mrs Van Der Merwe accompanied Lower I to the same venue on Friday 23rd September in particular to study the work of the artist Georgia O’Keeffe.

Mrs Van Der Merwe reports on the visit:

‘The girls in Lower I were fortunate to have beautiful sunny September weather for their visit to the Tate Modern. We walked down to Hanger lane and boarded the Central Line train to St Paul’s and walked round the Cathedral down to the Millennium Bridge. We then crossed the Thames to Bankside and the impressive Tate Modern building.  London was looking particularly fine in the bright Autumn sunshine.

At the Tate Modern we hurried to the Georgia O’Keeffe exhibition, a wonderful collection of over 100 of her paintings including, ‘Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 1932’, the most expensive painting by a female artist ever sold at auction.

Georgia O’Keeffe once said “When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it’s your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else. Most people in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower. I want them to see it whether they want to or not.”

The girls loved the exhibition and spent time really looking at the paintings and sketching their favourite images in their Art sketch books. On leaving the gallery they all chose a postcard of their favourite painting to take back with them.

After a quick lunch we returned to view several galleries to see more of the wide range of Modern Art held at the Tate, spending time in the Rothko galleries and looking at works by Picasso, Dali and Degas.

Back at school the girls have continued to look at Georgia O’Keeffe’s techniques in their Art lessons and discussing and drawing their response to her work.’
