At St Augustine’ Priory we have encouraged girls to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for many years, with girls achieving Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.  Lucy Jacks, Lower VA, takes us through the latest episode in the life of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at St Augustine’s Priory which took place in a muddy East Sussex over the weekend of 24th – 26th June.

‘Last weekend, Lower V completed our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award. The expedition itself was successful and despite constant weather changes and sore feet, we all improved our team working skills, camping skills, map reading and walking skills.

Most of us had never set up a tent or cooked our own meal on a small stove or have ever dreamed of walking over 12km a day, yet we all learnt that we could if we put our minds to it. The campsite was a happy place and luckily the mood in the camp was mostly great! The best moment for most of us was on the second evening in which the teachers accompanying us played old games like 40-40 to make the trip even more enjoyable!

The most challenging part for me was the fact that my one of my walking boots completely fell apart two minutes after leaving the campsite to begin the walk! Although with the help of A LOT of duct tape and a few hair ties, my boot hung on until we returned. Between getting lost in fields of sheep, in a balloon farm, eating lunch on a log in the rain or being knee deep in mud, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition will be an unforgettable experience for everyone.’
