A Shining Success

Walking through London

A couple of weeks ago we wrote about Mrs Cotton’s (Deputy Head, Seniors) plans to take part in the Shine Walk (London) for Cancer Research on Saturday 23rd September in memory of her friend, Jane Fisher-Hunt.  This annual event takes place at night, a magical time to walk through London with a group of friends, when the sights of London are lit up and the roads can be enjoyed, free of traffic and crowds.

Here, Mrs Cotton tells us of her journey:

‘On the evening of Saturday 23rd September I completed a long stroll (13.1 miles) through central London with Team Tiny Clanger to raise money for Cancer Research UK. We were blessed with fine weather and serenaded by a rock choir as we passed over the start line in Southwark Park at 8:45pm. Stopping on Tower Bridge, just shy of the two mile mark, we sang a Bruckner motet (Locus Iste) in memory of our friend Jane, much to the bemusement of passers-by and other Shine Walk participants.

After that the route took us over Tower Bridge, around Bank, St Paul’s Cathedral, down to the Embankment, Whitehall, around Buckingham Palace and Victoria and down to the Chelsea Embankment. We passed Big Ben around midnight, and then crossed over to the Southbank walking past the London Eye, Shakespeare’s Globe and the Tate Modern before crossing over London Bridge and over the finish line in Old Billingsgate at around 01:15pm, bleary eyed, exhausted but proud of ourselves for completing the challenge and working as a team.

So far the fundraising total on our Just Giving page is £7,780.82 which will rise to over £9,000 once Gift Aid is added in. Thank you so much to all the staff and parents who have donated so far and for all of your words of encouragement, which really kept me going especially over the last 3 miles of the walk!
