Lower I: when Art meets Nature

Posted: 22nd June 2017

Art in the allotment

One of the joys of St Augustine’s Priory is that you can combine subjects and explore different ways of working, stretching minds and expanding horizons.  Here, Mrs Mackay of the Art Department, describes Lower I’s latest artistic forays.

‘On Wednesday 14th June Lower I spent a lesson in the allotment. The girls worked hard planting and tending to the crops.  Not to mention all the watering, on what was a very hot day.

The girls then picked some produce and took it into the Prep Meadow and made land art in the style of Andy Goldsworthy, whom we are currently studying as part of the curriculum.

Andy Goldsworthy makes wonderful art based around the natural world, works of beauty which lead us to  an unexpected and joyous vision of nature.

After photographing the girls’ work we washed the strawberries they had picked and ate them for lunch!

The girls fully embraced being given the task of working in the allotment and it was wonderful to hear them talk about colour, shape and texture as they considered how they might use the produce in order to respond to the work of Andy Goldsworthy.

Well done, Lower I on your beautiful work.’
