Inaugural ‘First Mathematics Challenge’

Posted: 5th July 2019

Lower I and Upper I rejoice in Maths.

The inaugural First Mathematics Challenge, aimed at pupils in Years 3 and 4 was recently sat by Lower I and Upper I.

Forty-four of our pupils sat the challenge this year and we had some wonderful results across both year groups.  Ms Cattigan, teacher in the Juniors and Form Teacher, Upper II Alpha, reports:

‘In this, the inaugural First Mathematics Challenge (FMC) we gained gained 31 Bronze Awards, 10 Silver Awards and 2 Gold Awards which went to Sarah Kamar and Enya McDermott. Special mention must be given to Rin Hirasawa who achieved full marks and gained a Full Marks Award. Congratulations to all the girls who took part!

The First Mathematics Challenge (FMC) has been specifically created to give all pupils in Lower I and Upper I the opportunity to take part in a National Challenge.  It offers an enjoyable and exciting experience for all pupils across the two year groups, boosting confidence in Mathematics and showing children the different way questions can be asked. We believe in the importance of Problem Solving as a means of helping pupils develop their reasoning skills.

Produced by The Mathematical Association, alongside their Primary Mathematics Challenge (PMC) which is geared for Years 5 and 6, the FMC is designed to make pupils think outside the box. Many of the problems are not heavily reliant on mathematical knowledge, but can be solved by logical reasoning.

Why not have a go at solving these sample questions?’
