‘Things I Know to be True’

Katrina Richardson, Lower VI, was one of the group of students who went to see ‘Things I Know To Be True’ last week.  Written by playwright Andrew Bovell, this was a Frantic Assembly production.  Frantic Assembly are known for their energetic productions using actors’ bodies in movement designed to interpret and bring out the meaning of the play in an innovative and inspiring way, using a set that is stark and gives space for imagination to thrive.

Viewing this production was an integral part of the A Level GCSE Drama studies and candidates will be writing an evaluation.  As can be seen from Katrina’s review, this was an intriguing, unique and thoroughly worthwhile evening spent at the theatre:

‘On Wednesday 24th January, students from Upper V and Lower VI had the privilege to go and watch Frantic Assembly’s production, “Things I Know To Be True” at The Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith. The show itself was incredibly moving, following some of the hidden issues that exist within a “normal” family, yet inserting many moments of humour. We saw the story of a family and marriage through the eyes of four grown siblings struggling to define themselves beyond their parents’ love and expectations. The play highlighted the issue sometimes overlooked that once a child turns eighteen, they are relinquished in many ways from their parents’ responsibility. We saw this in the family mechanics when the issues of abuse, gender identity, adultery and financial strain were uncovered after we had originally seen a balanced family dynamic.

Walking out of the theatre left me thinking about the specific issues raised in the play, something which most directors strive to achieve – audience reflection.

Overall, the production, although thought provoking and poignant, still effortlessly captured the beauty of a large family – clashing personalities alongside harmonious interactions. Definitely worth a watch while it’s still running at The Lyric.’
