Seniors meet Dr Melanie Tan

Careers Talk.

Mr Ferguson, History Department, has organised a great series of Careers Talks this term.  He reports on last Friday’s event:

‘Friday 27th November, saw Dr Melanie Tan, a doctor and consultant with the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, graciously make time in her busy schedule to offer a virtual talk to our upper Senior pupils. Dr Tan has been a great friend to the St Augustine’s Priory community, having spoken to our pupils in the past and has been instrumental in securing valuable work experience in hospitals, in particular to our recent leavers who went onto study medicine.

Even during lockdown, the talk was a massive success. Dr Tan spoke via Zoom and our Priory 6 pupils, who were self-isolating at home, were able to call in and hear her fascinating talk. Whilst here at St Augustine’s, our Lower and Upper Vs gathered (socially distanced, of course) in our Woodlands suite to take in the talk via the Zoom feed from UCL.

Dr Tan also offered a little extra time for a Q&A session that always proves edifying and useful for our aspiring doctors and medical professionals of the future.

Sheyda Ghorat, an Upper V pupil currently considering her future in STEM, commented: “The recent careers talk really helped me to solidify my decision to pursue a job in science and the healthcare sector. I learned about what qualities are needed to make a good doctor and the whole process that a medical student will make until they become a consultant. It was really helpful to hear from someone who has had many years of experience and someone who appreciates the importance and ethics behind medicine.”
