Artists raise funds for Centrepoint

One of the highlights of the Summer Term at St Augustine’s Priory is the Arts Evening which showcases our pupils’ work in art, drama, poetry and music.  The work of our GCSE and A Level artists is exhibited and souvenir postcards of the work are produced and sold on the evening.

Miss Eng, Head of Art, reports on some great news resulting from this endeavour:

‘We are delighted to have just received a letter in the post from Centrepoint, the charity supporting homeless young people, letting us know that our donation of £127.44 from the Summer Arts Evening last term was enough to sponsor a young person to have a room for an entire year, as well as paying for a counselling session.

Funds for Centrepoint were raised by the staff and students of the Art Department last year through the making and sale of postcards featuring 20 contemporary images from our talented GCSE and A Level artists, which were snapped up by friends, families and members of the public.

We are particularly proud of Photography Prefect, Isabella Ju and Creative Industries Prefect, Haranya Yogananthan, who organised and worked on the stall for the whole evening and for their overall contribution and commitment in the set-up of the exhibition. Thanks also go to Mashan Marri, Mariyan Marri, Sophie Routledge and Anna Cunningham.’

Hearing the good news about our donation, Haranya in Lower VI said “That’s so amazing. I can’t believe that that amount of money can help somebody so much for a whole year. We really should do even more next time.”

Ms Eng added, “I’m so proud of the girls for what they have been able to achieve. Centrepoint is a charity very close to my heart, because of the work it does for young people and it is particularly special that our students have raised money for people their own age through their own creativity and good managerial skills. Our postcards were really popular and the girls really enjoyed selling them and talking to others about their work. This is just one example of how Art can make a difference!”
