Mrs Cotton’s shining walk

Our Deputy Head, Seniors, Mrs Kate Cotton, has announced that she will ‘be going for a very long stroll (c. 13 miles) with 17 friends on Saturday 23rd September to raise money for Cancer Research’.

Mrs Cotton will be participating in the Shine (London) walk in memory of her good friend Jane Fisher-Hunt, who died just over a year ago of lung cancer, leaving her husband Steven and 10-year-old daughter Olivia.

The Shine Night Walk is ‘Cancer UK’s marathon night walk, bringing people from across the UK together to light up London and fund life-saving research’ and Mrs Cotton will be taking part in the event’s half marathon from Southwark Park to Old Billingsgate.

Mrs Cotton says, ‘We are collectively known as Team Tiny Clanger as that was Jane’s nickname.  Jane was boundlessly positive and had an infectious zest for life. Even after her terminal diagnosis she remained extremely upbeat and only a few people knew that she was extremely ill. Jane had a wonderful high (and loud) soprano voice but was short in stature – hence the nickname. We have all been singing together for a very long time, I won’t say exactly how long so that I can maintain the illusion of perhaps being slightly younger than I actually am, and for many years we sang in a semi-professional chamber choir called Exmoor Singers of London. Many of us still sing together now but prefer a slightly more relaxed rehearsal regime with the Anton Bruckner Choir instead and we remain close to Jane’s husband and daughter.

I am sure that all of us have been touched by cancer in some way, each of us has our own individual stories. However, Jane’s untimely death aged only 50 has rocked us all.’

If you would like to make a donation to Mrs Cotton’s walk for Cancer Research, there is a link to the Team Tiny Clanger’s fundraising page below.  Mrs Cotton concludes, ‘There will be singing on our walk, there may be tears, but it will all be in a good cause. And if you are considering making a donation, to quote the Tesco’s adverts: “Every little helps!”’
