Quicksticks Festival nets success with local Catholic schools

There is something superhuman about the P.E. Department at St Augustine’s Priory. The pace at which they operate would rival Road Runner. And are we grateful for it? Oh yes! One of the many pleasures of working here is the reassurance that our girls are free to be themselves. No matter their interests, hobbies, pursuits and goals, we encourage pupils to follow their intellectual curiosity as well as any other curiosity that contributes to their health and wellbeing. The P.E. department exemplifies this ethos.

Amidst the bustle of netball matches, hockey games, swimming galas, dancing showcases, cross-country runs and… I’m running out of breath… our dedicated team of P.E. staff find the time to share our facilities and enthusiasm with our friends from other schools.

Last week, Mrs Cogswell organised a Quicksticks Festival, for which we hosted four local Catholic primary schools, Mount Carmel, St Gregory’s, St Mary’s and St Vincent’s, for an exhilarating afternoon of Quicksticks, a version of hockey for young people. The event which took place on our full size, flood lit astro turf drew over 60 local children, strengthening community ties between Catholic schools in Ealing and Chiswick.

The game offers a fun, safe way to introduce pupils to the game of hockey. The fast pace and lively atmosphere also demonstrated to pupils the benefits of collaboration in sport. We regularly report the partnership working in our classrooms, and it is of equal importance that we recognise the huge contribution that sports activities make to our girls’ ability to learn new skills, develop their team-work and discover their individual strengths, in a safe environment.

Our Headteacher, Mrs Raffray, observed:

“St Augustine’s Priory is delighted to make available its extensive grounds for community use. We enjoyed further strengthening relationships with local Catholic schools and enabling an event of such high sporting standards.”
