Chapel Kneelers: Exciting Update

Posted: 24th May 2017

We take delivery of the first kneeler

Miss Eng, Head of Art, reports on the exciting news that the first of our Chapel kneelers has arrived! The project, initiated in our Ealing centenary year of 2015, enlisted the talents of pupils and parents in designing kneelers for our Chapel.  Pupils, parents, staff and past pupils have been engaged over the past year in sewing the completed designs and this week we took delivery of our first kneeler!

Miss Eng commented: ‘I’m excited to announce that the very first printed kneeler has arrived as a sample, and was opened by one of the youngest stitchers yesterday!

The design was one that I adapted from something that was drawn by our current Upper V (Upper IV Gifted and Talented girls at the time of design), and was sewn by Mrs McDermott and her family and Mrs Mackay and her family , amongst many others, in lunch breaks. St Augustine’s Priory community all over!

A few of the Sixth Formers have already previewed the kneeler in the Art Room and are in love with it.

We look forward to delivery of some more kneelers before the end of term.

As we celebrate the Upper VI Leavers’ Mass and Reception on Thursday 25th May, the kneeler design below takes inspiration from the poem ‘Burnt Norton’ from T.S. Eliot’s ‘Four Quartets’, featuring a curious little bird, the garden, and past, present and future. The roses represent Christ’s passion and the Virgin Mary, and were drawn from our school rose garden. The bird on this cushion also represents our Upper VI fledging flying the St Augustine’s Priory nest, and celebrates 2017, their final year, and the school theme of ‘Memory’.’

The other beautiful designs are shown below – we can’t wait to take possession!
