Social Sciences at St Augustine’s Priory consist of A Level subjects which are new to the girls; Business Studies, Economics, Politics, Psychology and Sociology.

We believe that critical thinking is essential for learning. Given that there are seldom definite “correct” answers in the social sciences, our girls develop the independent intellectual skills which enable them to engage with complex real-world issues and problems. The girls develop a curiosity for learning and an awareness of themselves and others and of how people function in widely varying groups, organisations and societies.

They learn to appreciate the significance of different beliefs, attitudes and values and the impact that these have on social, economic, political, and developmental processes.

The Social Sciences allow pupils opportunities to develop both their written and oral powers of expression. Emphasis is placed on discussions, debates and presentations, as well as more formal, written essays; these are essential skills for success at university and beyond.

The girls are encouraged to make the most of the many extra-curricular opportunities available both within and outside of school; there is an active Model United Nations Society, a Young Enterprise Society and a high-level debating club, amongst others.

The study of Business provides not only a deeper understanding of the commercial world in which we live, but a solid foundation in decision-making, problem-solving and critical thinking, which can form a springboard to university studies and future careers. A Level Business (Edexcel) offers students the opportunity to explore how businesses start, grow and adapt in an ever-changing global environment. Students will examine key areas such as marketing, finance, operations and human resources, developing analytical and evaluative skills essential for success in higher education and the workplace.  Student outcomes are excellent resulting from small class sizes and a focus on individual teaching and learning.

A Level Economics offers students a rigorous and engaging exploration of how economies function, both locally and globally. The course develops analytical thinking, quantitative skills, and the ability to evaluate real-world issues through microeconomic and macroeconomic lenses. Students study market behaviour, government intervention, global trade, and economic performance, gaining insight into topics like inflation, unemployment, and fiscal policy.

This qualification prepares learners for university-level study and careers in economics, finance, public policy, and beyond. It is ideal for students who enjoy problem-solving, current affairs, and understanding the forces that shape our world. Students can expect a well-rounded, academically robust course that nurtures intellectual curiosity. Students benefit from small class sizes enabling a tutorial approach and outstanding outcomes. Regular co-curricular trips take place. Pupils have benefitted from trips to the Bank of England as well visiting other firms operating in a wide variety of industry sectors. Our students regularly will go on to read Economics at Russell Group universities.

Politics is an exciting and dynamic subject; it gives students the chance to develop not only their written skills but also their confidence in speaking, debating, and presenting ideas. If you enjoy discussing current events, challenging ideas, and thinking critically about the world around you, Politics is the perfect choice.

Studying Politics helps you understand how decisions are made at local, national, and international levels. You will explore topics that affect everyone, from elections and political parties to global issues like human rights and international relations. Along the way, you will develop skills that are highly valued by universities and employers, including analysis, evaluation, and independent thinking.

Politics at St. Augustine’s Priory goes far beyond the textbook. You will have the chance to visit Parliament, attend conferences, meet inspiring guest speakers, and even gain work experience with MPs or political organisations. These opportunities make the subject real, exciting, and hugely rewarding.

Sociology is the study of society, helping you understand the world around you and the factors that shape people’s lives. At A Level, you will explore key issues such as family life, education, crime and deviance, social inequality, and the media. The course encourages you to think critically about how society works, why people behave the way they do, and how social structures influence our everyday experiences.

Through lively debates, research projects, discussions, and written assignments, you will develop strong analytical, evaluative, and communication skills. Sociology combines well with a wide range of subjects, including History, Politics, Psychology, and Economics, and provides a solid foundation for numerous university courses.

Studying Sociology at St Augustine’s Priory also offers enrichment opportunities such as talks from guest speakers, visits to the Old Bailey and parliament, and the chance to conduct your own research, making the subject both engaging and highly relevant to the world today.

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour, helping you understand why people think, feel, and act the way they do. At A Level, you will explore fascinating topics such as memory, attachment, social influence, psychopathology, and approaches within psychology. The course encourages you to analyse human behaviour from different perspectives, evaluate research evidence, and consider how psychology applies to real-world issues.

Through experiments, case studies, debates, and written assignments, you will develop critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills. Psychology combines well with numerous A level subjects and provides an excellent foundation for a wide range of university courses and careers, from medicine and law to business and education.

Studying Psychology at St Augustine’s Priory also offers enrichment opportunities including visits to museums and conferences, guest lectures, research projects, and practical applications, making the subject both engaging and relevant to understanding human experience in today’s world.
