Chiswick Book Festival Young People’s Poetry Competition 2020.
Mr Elder, English Department, enters students’ work each year for the Chiswick Book Festival Young People’s Poetry Competition, and our track record in this competition is excellent!
Mr Elder writes, ‘One of my first lessons with Form III Aleph in lockdown was on Wordsworth’s ‘Upon Westminster Bridge’. We read and analysed the poem and thought about London in 1802, when it was written. Ordinarily I might ask classes to compare the scene with London today, but what struck me was that of course London in lockdown was quiet and still – and very like the scene Wordsworth described. The students then wrote poems in response to what was happening. The poems I entered into the competition did not have to be related to London or the pandemic.’
We have now heard from the organisers of the competition the wonderful news that three of our pupils have won prizes in the Chiswick Book Festival Young People’s Poetry Competition: Tisha Maroo, Ivy Lo and Caitlin Gallagher Rattan. The prizes that the girls have won will be announced at the awards ceremony on Friday 11th September.
